Programme Overview

Qualification Objectives

Study National Diploma in Generic Management. This programme is targeted at middle level managers who are managing first line managers, including team leaders, supervisors, or junior managers. The course is appropriate for entities in the private or public sectors, including businesses, non-governmental organisations, or public institutions. The programme assumes the candidate has had some years’ experience as a first line supervisor and is now ready to be introduced to a range of more advanced managerial principles and practices, which can be applied and practiced in the workplace.

This National Certificate, Generic Management, ID 59201 (LP60269), is SAQA registered at NQF Level 5.

Learning Outcomes

The programme aims to develop managerial skills in eight areas:

1. Leadership

  • Analyse leadership and related theories in a work context
  • Build teams to achieve goals and objectives
  • Empower team members through recognising strengths, encouraging participation in decision making and delegating tasks

2. Relationship Management

  • Use communication techniques effectively
  • Devise and apply strategies to establish and maintain workplace relationships
  • Apply the principles and concepts of emotional intelligence to the management of self and others

3. Diversity and Conflict Management

  • Manage a diverse work force to add value
  • Interpret and manage conflicts within the workplace
  • Conduct negotiations to deal with conflict situations

4. People Management

  • Recruit and select candidates to fill defined positions
  • Lead people development and talent management
  • Monitor and evaluate team members against performance standards
  • Select and coach first line managers

5. Financial Management

  • Manage the finances of a unit
  • Apply mathematical analysis to economic and financial information

Prerequisites

This qualification is set at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework. Minimum entrance requirements include a Senior Certificate or higher (or equivalent), including Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 and Communication at NQF Level 4.

This qualification builds on the Generic Management Certificate at NQF Level 4. As such, it assumes that the candidate has had some years’ experience as a junior manager and has been exposed to first line supervisory training.

Programme Content

The National Certificate Generic Management offers a variety of specialisations. The Guarantee Trust programme is based on the General Management Specialisation.

The qualification is delivered through eight modules, which cover 24 unit standards and a total of 164 credits.

6. Best Practice Management

  • Module 24: Apply the Concept of Best Practice to a Unit

7. Change Management

8. Results-based Management

  • Module 33: Develop an operation plan for a unit

Programme Structure

Each course requires approximately fifteen hours of reading, activities, and tutorials per week. This means that a full-time student taking two courses at a time will spend approximately 30 hours per week devoted to their studies.

GTIB courses are delivered using a blended model of home based self-study and online learning.

For Distance learning Students: The time for completion will depend on the amount of time the student can devote to studies. A GTIB facilitator will support the student through the learning portal and a help desk is available to respond to student queries or problems.

On-line Learning Portal

The online learning resources are accessed on the Guarantee Trust site at elearn.guarantee.co.za. After each chapter, learners complete a series of activities to reinforce and test their knowledge, which are submitted on the learning portal. Learners may contact the GTIB Help Line to obtain assistance with any queries or problems.

Learners are encouraged to invest in their own electronic devices; either a laptop or a tablet, to facilitate access to the learning portal.
